Scenario

At the beginning of the new academic year, the TEL Department and IT Services "rollover" the previous year's modules. This essentially archives the previous year's modules into  an area in Canvas now titled "Past Enrolments" and populates your dashboard with the new, blank modules.

Solution

To make past modules reappear on your dashboard, complete the following.

  1. From the main menu in Canvas, click Modules, then click All Modules. You should then be able to see all your modules including your Past Enrolments.
  2. To make past modules reappear on your dashboard, click the star icon located next to the name of the module you want to reappear.

To copy older modules to the current academic year, complete the following.

  1. Open the older module that you wish to copy from your dashboard.
  2. Click Settings from the module navigation menu.
  3. Click Export Course Content.
  4. Note: Some modules could be referred to as courses depending on its origin.

  5. Under Export type, select Module and then click Create Export. A progress bar displays. Exporting a module in Canvas may take a few minutes, depending on its size. You will receive an email when the export is complete. If you the exported module does not download automatically and no option appears, refresh the page and you should see a link titled New Export or Module Export from X minutes ago. Click on the link to download it.
  6. Navigate to the module which you want to import content into.
  7. Click Settings on the module navigation menu.
  8. Click Import Module Content.
  9. Select Canvas module export package from the Content type list.
  10. Click Choose file and locate the file you want to upload from your computer.
  11. Select the Select specific content checkbox. See here for more information. Select the content you want to import after you review the remaining page options. After you start importing the content, the import selection cannot be cancelled. Select every option apart from Module settings and Syllabus body.
  12. Click Select content.
  13. Optional: If you want to adjust the due dates associated with the course events and assignments, click the Adjust events and due dates checkbox.
  14. Click Import. The Current Jobs section displays the status of your import. Running reports display a menu bar with the time remaining to complete the import.
  15. Note: If you chose to select specific content in your course, the current job will show as Waiting for Select which means you must select the content you want to import. This will bring you to another window where you can select the specific content from the old module to the new one.

  16. Once completed, select the home option in your module menu and you should be able to see your existing content (if any) plus the content you recently imported.
