You can adjust an exam to support open book, where students can use study materials during the exam.

To create an assignment for the open book exam, complete the following steps.

  1. From module navigation, click Assignments.
  2. Click +Assignment to create a new assignment. This will give you the option to define the details for your new assignment
  3. In the description area, you can provide the questions you want the student to answer in the exam (if you set a time and date under Available from, these will not be visible to students until after this time). You can also use the Rich Content Editor in the description area to link to relevant files, or URLs.
  4. Configure other options as normal. Ensure that the following are set correctly:
    1. Points - Enter the number of points for your assignment (It is recommended, for marking purposes, to set this field to 100 points for any and all assignments. Weightings can be added afterwards)
    2. Submission type - Select Online from the Submission type list, and then select the File Uploads checkbox.
    3. Assign to - This identifies which students in the course may submit against this assignment. By default, this should be set to Everyone
    4. Due - This is the deadline (date and time) for the student. They can still submit after this date, but all submissions will be identified as late. It is recommended that this be set to the deadline by which the student should have submitted their response for the open book exam (i.e. if the open book exam is set to take place between 13:00 - 15:00, the deadline should be set to 15:00).
    5. Available from / Until - This determines when the open book exam will become available to students and when they can access it until. It is recommended that Available from be set according to when the student should begin the exam. It is recommended that Until be left blank.

To access the student responses, complete the following steps.

  1. From the Assignments page, click on the assignment. Click SpeedGrader.
  2. or
