What is UDOIT Accessibility Checker?

UDOIT (Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool) is a module-level accessibility checker designed to raise awareness of common accessibility issues and to help educators in improving the accessibility of their Canvas modules. UDOIT scans Canvas modules to identify these accessibility issues and provides resources and options for fixing these issues from within the UDOIT interface.

UDOIT scans for common accessibility issues based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) which is the standard for accessible digital content and provides results as a list of errors and suggestions:

  • Errors – issues based on the WCAG 2.1, would most likely cause issues for a user
  • Suggestions – changes that can improve the learning environment

What content does UDOIT scan for in a module?

UDOIT will help to identify common accessibility errors and provide suggestions based on the following areas of a Canvas module:

  • Announcements
  • Assignments
  • Discussions (Topics, not replies)
  • Files (i.e. HTML files. Provides area to review other file formats)
  • Pages
  • Syllabus
  • Module URLs (Largely only links to Vimeo, YouTube, Kaltura will be checked)

UDOIT will help to identify common accessibility issues including the following (a full list can be found here: What does UDOIT Accessibility Checker scan for?):

  • Use of headings in the page structure
  • Alternative text for images
  • Table Headers
  • Color contrast
  • Video captions

Can I still use the Canvas Accessibility Checker?

Yes, UDOIT can act as a complement to the in-built Canvas Accessibility Checker which is available within the Rich Content Editor. The Canvas Accessibility Checker scans content one page at a time and scans for 11 of the most common accessibility issues. UDOIT scans the entire module at once and looks to identify 21 of the most common accessibility issues.
