What are EXO Modules in Canvas?

Each MTU Module repeat gets a unique EXO CRN which is taken from the Banner System.

All students who are registered to take an August assessment will be enrolled on the relevant Canvas EXO.

EXO modules are module-based rather than CRN-based but the original semester 1 or 2 CRN structures have been retained with these modules in the form of what Canvas calls sections.

Making a module repeat assessment available in an EXO module

Each EXO module in Canvas has been provided with a structure to help support the clear provision of a repeat assignment for students.

To create the assessment in Canvas, simply create the assessment as you usually would

Before setting your assignment in Canvas, please ensure you review the following:

Making an assessment available for all, or for specific, CRN repeats.

EXO Canvas modules are module-based rather than CRN-based. This means that there will be one EXO canvas module for all instances of the module. All CRNs associated with this module will be available in the module as "sections" (different groupings of students).

If you wish to make the same assessment available to all instances/ CRNs repeating the module:

  1. Create your Canvas assignment as usual until you get to the “Assign” option.
  2. Set the "Assign to" option to "everyone

If you wish to provide a specific group of students  - according to the module instance/ CRN - with a specific assignment, different to another group of students

  1. Create your Canvas assignment as usual until you get to the “Assign” option.
  2. Set the "Assign to" option to select the relevant section or sections - based on the CRN - from the Module section list which appears

Do I have to use an EXO module for reapeat Examinations?

Technically most Semester 1 and 2 modules should - by default - remain available to staff and students over the Summer for the purposes of repeat coursework submission. There can be exceptions to this however, so the general recommendation is that you setup the relevant EXO module for resubmission, as this represents a "cleaner" option:

  • It will definitely be available to only the students who have registered to resubmit during the Summer.
  • EXO modules are module and not CRN based so a single assignment in an EXO module can facilitate submisison from multiple CRNs.
  • EXO modules are generally less cluttered than Semester 1/2 modules, so it can be made clear to the students what specifically is required for submission over the summer - and when.
