What is it?
Trello is a free productivity and project management app that can be used personally and collaboratively with friends, colleagues or students. Trello boards can be created for various projects with each board containing lists of cards which can represent individual tasks.

You can create as many boards as you like and you can create teams to group potential collaborators easier. For instance you can have a team for different student groups, a team for family members, one for colleagues and one for friends.

The following short videos demonstrate how Trello can be used for project management and in a school setting.

How can I use it?
Trello has a variety of uses:
  • Create a personal board to keep your work tasks organised or plan a holiday
  • Create a board for home projects and share it with your family
  • Create a board for class notes and include milestones and share it with your students
Students can create their own boards to work collaboratively on group projects and keep on top of the tasks involved and the deadlines required.

To get started using Trello for personal projects:

  • Sign up for a free account at https://trello.com/signup using your email or with your Google credentials
  • Take a look at the Welcome Board to get your bearings and to see how lists and cards work in your Trello boards.
  • Click the + button at the top right of the screen to Create a New Board. Give it a title and keep this board private.
  • In this board, click Add a list and call it “To Do”, add another list and call it “In Progress” and add another list and call it “Done”. When you add a card to any of these lists you can drag and drop them from one list to another.

To get started using Trello with your class or for student group work:
  • Sign up for a free account at https://trello.com/signup using your email or with your Google credentials
  • Take a look at the Welcome Board to get your bearings and to see how lists and cards work in your Trello boards.
  • Click the + button at the top right of the screen and click Create Personal Team. Create a team for one of your class groups or a group project.
  • Add the group members by adding them using their email address in the Members tab
  • Create a new board and leave it as team visible so that the group can see this board automatically.
Why should I use it?
Trello lets you organise tasks and share these with relevant collaborators so that everyone has a full view of the requirements, deadlines, updates and progress of projects. Collaborators can be added to tasks that they are responsible for and add comments, files and checklists to individual tasks helping to keep project boards tidy but valuable.

Tools like Trello can help to engage students in group work and make communicating on projects easier. Trello is particularly useful for people who find it easier to break down tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks of work.

Top Tip
Download the Trello app for your mobile device, available from the App Store and from Google Play. The Trello app works particularly well on mobile and syncs across your devices allowing you to add updates and new tasks while on the go.
