Scenario

The polling feature for meetings allows you to create single choice or multiple choice polling questions for your meetings.

You can launch the poll during your meeting and gather the responses from your attendees. You also have the ability to download a report of polling after the meeting. Polls can also be conducted anonymously, if you do not wish to collect participant information with the poll results.

Solution

There are two options for creating a poll in Zoom:

Creating the poll and adding questions one-by-one

To create the poll one question at a time, complete the following steps:

  1. First, schedule your classes in Zoom. Go to your Canvas module and from the Zoom integration schedule your class. Once your meeting is scheduled, you can edit the meeting details. When you edit the details, you will be given the option to add a poll.
  2. Once your meeting is scheduled, you can edit the meeting details. However, to add a poll you need to edit the meeting details through your Zoom account.  When you edit the details here, you will be given the option to add a poll. To find your meeting in your Zoom account:
    1. Go to https://telcit.zoom.us
    2. Click the Sign in. This will bring up the single sign on MTU page, please sign in using your email and password.
    3. Click the Meetings tab from the left, find the meeting to which you want to add a poll. Click the meeting topic. In the example shown here, the meeting topic is TEL Dept Help.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the meeting page and find the Polls section.
  4. Click Add to add your poll. The Add a Poll window displays. Here you can:
    • Enter a title for the poll.
    • Enter the first question.
    • Enter one or more answer choices.
    • You can also choose to make students' responses anonymous by checking the option
  5. To add another question to the poll, click + Add a Question.
  6. Once you're done adding questions, click Save. Your poll has now been added to your meeting. With your meeting launched (launch meeting from Canvas) , you can open your poll at any time by clicking Polls at the bottom centre of the Zoom meeting window. The new poll(s) appear in a window in your meeting.

  7. Click Launch Poll to make the poll visible to your students. The poll begins. As students make their selections, you can see the percentages for each option change in real-time. The timer at the top right of the window displays the elapsed time in seconds.
  8. When enough time has been given for students to answer, click End Poll.
  9. Once the poll is closed, you can click one of the following:
    1. Share Results: Display the aggregated poll results immediately to the students in your meeting
    2. Re-launch Polling: Start the poll over again, deleting current results.

Creating the Poll in a CSV file and bulk uploading

To create the entire poll in a file on your computer and then upload the file to your Zoom meeting, complete the following steps.

  1. First, schedule your classes in Zoom. Go to your Canvas module and from the ZOOM integration schedule your class. Once your meeting is scheduled, you can edit the meeting details. When you edit the details, you will be given the option to add a poll.
  2. Find the meeting in the Zoom section of your Canvas course. Under the upcoming meetings click on the meeting topic to open the settings for the meeting.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the meeting page and find the Polls section.
  4. You will need to format your CSV file in a specific way so that Zoom can import it. Click Download a CSV Template to download a file that you can edit with your own poll questions.
  5. Warning: Always download a new CSV template if creating a CSV poll. Overwriting previous versions can cause issues and Zoom may also update the template.

  6. Find the CSV file that you just downloaded to your computer. Open it in a spreadsheet editor such as Microsoft Excel.
  7. Replace text in the file with your own titles, questions, and question choices. Delete any text that you don't need.
  8. Save the file. You can save over the existing file, or save it with a different name. Note where you are saving the file so that you can find it.
  9. In the Zoom meeting details page where you downloaded the template, click the Import CSV button.
  10. Upload your CSV file. Your poll(s) will appear listed on the page. At this point you can still delete a poll by clicking Delete to the right of any listed poll.
