There are a number of different ways of setting up a quiz to be available for a specific period. The 2 most effective solutions are to
  1. Use the "Until" time for the quiz
  2. Use the Quiz timer and moderate option

1. Use the "Until" time for the quiz

You can set the "Available from" and "Until" time in the quiz settings for a quiz to determine it's availability. The "until" time overrides all other elements in Canvas (including the quiz timer, etc). Because of this, it is the most reliable indicator of when the quiz becomes available and becomes no longer available.

To do this:
  • Set the "Available from" in the quiz settings to determine when the quiz is available to students.
  • Set the "Until" in the quiz settings to determine when the quiz is no longer available to students.

If you wish to allow a longer availability time for specific students (e.g. students with accommodations) you can
  1. Click on the "+Add" button at the bottom of the Assign section
  2. Type in the name of the specific student(s) and set an alternative "Until" time.

2. Use the Quiz timer and moderate option

You can also set the quiz availability using the quiz timer and "moderate" section of the quiz.

If you wish to allow a longer availability time for specific students (e.g. students with accommodations) you can:
  1. Moderate you assessment by following Moderate a student's single attempt in New Quizzes.
  2. Find the student that you want to give accomodations to, and click the edit icon .
  3. Select from the Time adjustments list.
    1. To add additional time to the assessment attempt, select the Give additional time from the list, then select the amount of time. Time units can be set to minutes or hours.
    2. When finished adjusting the time limit, click Save.

Please note however, that the above adjustments will be overwritten by the "Until" time. So if a quiz due to run between 10:00 - 12:00 has additional time set in the moderate area of the quiz, but the the quiz has an "until" time which expires at 12:00, it will end for all students at 12:00.

In this scenario, it is recommended to potentially set the "Until" time to facilitate  students with accommodations - e.g. if a quiz is due to run between 10:00 - 12:00 but to allow 15 extra minutes for students with accommodations, one can set the until time to 12:15.
